Rhône River Cruises
The Rhone River flows to the Mediterranean through the gastronomic capital of Lyon and the picturesque wine regions of Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhone.
Lyon is a major French city with sights which include Place Bellecour and the covered passageways of Vieux Lyon. The imposing Basilica of Notre Dame looks across Lyon from hill-top Fourviere. Cruising north from Lyon to Chalon-sur-Saone are Tournus and the pretty villages of Beaujolais and the Maconnais wine region. Further north is Beaune and its famous Hospice with tiled roof. South of Lyon Tournon and Tain L’Hermitage face each other across the Rhone, connected by a footbridge and backed by steeply-sloping vines. Viviers is an ancient walled town with historic buildings including the Maison des Chevaliers.
As the Rhone approaches the Mediterranean, see the famous bridge at Avignon and the huge Palace of the Popes, started by Pope Benedict XII in 1335, and one of the most visited sights in France. Further south at Arles is the vast well-preserved Roman amphitheatre and the memorable city Museum. Perhaps spot scenes painted by Van Gogh.
Cruise itineraries may include visits to the Camargue region, noted for its cowboys, white horses and black bulls, or with a stay on the Mediterranean coast.
